Mission:

Our goal is to become a global community of professionals caring for young adults aged out of orphanages and foster care.

Sponsor:

Lighthouse Transitional Care is a Christ-focused nonprofit organization in Riga, Latvia. We work with young adults aged out of the orphan care system or from difficult family backgrounds. Our goal is to mentor and lead them toward healthy adulthood. We do this by building mentoring relationships and teaching practical life skills.

Notes:

“It’s really hard to get data on [care leavers].” –Amanda Banister

We think the number of young adults leaving care has skyrocketed due to Covid and war, but it’s impossible to know.

In general, at 18, one is considered emancipated from an orphanage or foster care system.

“Anytime you take a person who has grown up in a disadvantaged position and ask them to navigate a complex government structure, it’s hard. That’s why people struggle to get resources that are available to them.” –Amanda Banister
