Mission:
Our goal is to become a global community of professionals caring for young adults aged out of orphanages and foster care.
Sponsor:
Lighthouse Transitional Care is a Christ-focused nonprofit organization in Riga, Latvia. We work with young adults aged out of the orphan care system or from difficult family backgrounds. Our goal is to mentor and lead them toward healthy adulthood. We do this by building mentoring relationships and teaching practical life skills.
Notes:
Dace Šmitiņa is the social worker at Lighthouse Transitional Care.
She works to assess the needs of the youth we work with, form relationships and connect them to the resources available to them.
She says:
“Since I was little, I wanted to help people. I knew I couldn’t be a doctor because I don’t like blood. The thing that felt logical was to become a social worker! I think this is best way I can spend my life.”
“I want to help people in difficult situations and to show them love. I want them to know there is someone FOR them.”
“The time between youth and adulthood is a time when you’re searching for yourself, and you need a compass to guide you, and if these youth don’t have anyone to guide them, they are in danger of ending up like their parents. They need support to stop the cycle.”
“The main resource youth need is guidance. They need healthy support, healthy people, someone to look up to, someone they can ask for help.”
